As the United States celebrate Black History Month by highlighting and recognizing the contributions of people of color, let us not forget the many impact of the West Indian diaspora in the various facets of life such as sports, namely cricket. Introduced by early English colonists throughout the various islands, cricket was a sport of gentlemen and military personnel. The inclusion of black players in the West Indies team marked a moment of democratic integration in society, and the talented West Indies players helped to overturn an existing idea of racial supremacy. Historians state that cricket, besides the Native American sport lacrosse, was both the first organized team sport and the first major team sport in the United States as it was played by British colonists in North America. Although the sport lost its popularity, immigrants to the United States from traditional cricket playing nations such as the West Indies have helped to encourage and stimulate the growth of the game and its resurgence. Taking his place in cricket history is Mr. Lawrence "Yagga" Rowe once described by Michael Holding, his team mate, as "the best batsman I ever saw". He made his debut for Jamaica in 1968–69 history on his Test match debut v New Zealand at Sabina Oval, Kingston in 1972, scoring 214 and 100 not out, the first time that a cricketer had scored a double and single century on Test debut.
