How Genelle Marshall Is Weaving Caribbean Culture into Fashion & Beauty

In the vibrant world of Caribbean entrepreneurship, creativity often becomes the foundation for powerful stories of innovation and resilience. For Genelle Marshall, a 38-year-old Caribbean-born, Guyanese entrepreneur, creativity has been the driving force behind a multifaceted career that blends artistry, beauty, and business. From mastering crochet as a young girl to building a growing brand rooted in handmade craftsmanship, Marshall represents a new generation of Caribbean creatives transforming passion into purpose.

Marshall began crocheting at just 10 years old, inspired by watching her mother create beautiful handmade pieces. What started as a childhood hobby quickly developed into a lifelong passion—one that would eventually evolve into her thriving crochet brand, Meembroid. Today, the brand is known for its distinctive handmade swimwear, hats, and accessories that reflect the vibrant colors, textures, and cultural influences of the Caribbean.

But Marshall’s creative journey extends far beyond crochet. With more than 10 years of certified experience in hair styling and eight years in professional makeup, she has cultivated a versatile career in the beauty industry. Her work seamlessly merges fashion, beauty, and craftsmanship, allowing her to create a holistic approach to self-expression that empowers her clients to feel confident and unique.

Over the past five years, Meembroid has steadily grown, attracting a loyal community of supporters who appreciate the authenticity and artistry behind each handcrafted piece. Now, Marshall is preparing for the next phase of her entrepreneurial journey—launching a physical salon space that will combine beauty services with her creative brand, offering clients an immersive experience where artistry and personal style intersect.

Deeply connected to her Caribbean roots, Marshall’s mission goes beyond fashion and beauty. Through her work, she aims to uplift her community, inspire Caribbean women and creatives, and demonstrate that passion, persistence, and cultural pride can be the foundation of a successful business.

In this exclusive interview with Caribbean eMagazine, Genelle Marshall shares her journey—from her early days learning crochet to building Meembroid into a brand that celebrates creativity, culture, and empowerment.

You began crocheting at just 10 years old. What first inspired you to pick up crochet, and how did that early passion shape the creative entrepreneur you are today?

I started crocheting because I loved creating something from nothing. It began as a hobby—watching my mother craft inspired me to pick up a hook and yarn myself. That early passion taught me patience, attention to detail, and the joy of building something unique with my own hands—all qualities that are central to how I run Meembroid today. It gave me a foundation for creativity and the confidence to turn a craft into a business.

As a Caribbean-born Guyanese entrepreneur, how has your cultural background influenced your creativity and the designs you produce through Meembroid?

My Caribbean roots are a huge part of my creative identity. The colors, textures, and vibrancy of the islands naturally inspire my designs. Growing up in Guyana, I was surrounded by rich patterns and bold aesthetics, which I now translate into swimwear, hats, and accessories that celebrate that energy. I want my pieces to carry that sense of warmth, culture, and heritage wherever they go.

Your brand specializes in handmade swimwear, hats, and accessories. What inspired you to focus on these particular items?

I noticed a gap in the market for stylish, handmade pieces that felt personal yet wearable. Swimwear and accessories are both functional and expressive—they allow people to showcase individuality. Crochet, in particular, adds texture and uniqueness to these items, making each piece feel like a statement of creativity and self-expression.

Crochet fashion has become increasingly popular worldwide. How do you ensure your designs remain unique while staying on trend?

I always start with my own creative vision, drawing inspiration from my heritage, current trends, and customer feedback. While I keep an eye on global fashion, I never compromise the originality of Meembroid. Every piece is handcrafted with intention, and I often experiment with color combinations, patterns, and textures that aren’t commonly seen in mainstream designs.

You have over 10 years of certified experience in hair and 8 years in professional makeup. How do these beauty skills complement your crochet business and creative identity?

Beauty and fashion are both about self-expression. My experience in hair and makeup allows me to see how an outfit, accessory, or design works with a person’s overall aesthetic. It also gives me insight into styling, color coordination, and trends, which I apply directly to my crochet designs. Essentially, my beauty skills help me bring a holistic creative vision to life.

Meembroid has grown significantly over the past five years. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while building your brand?

The biggest challenges have been balancing creativity with the business side of things—managing production, marketing, and finances while staying true to my vision. Scaling handmade products is tricky because it takes time and care to maintain quality. There were also moments of self-doubt, but perseverance and support from my community kept me moving forward.

What has been one of the most rewarding moments in your entrepreneurial journey so far?

One of the most rewarding moments was seeing a customer wear a Meembroid piece and tell me how it made them feel confident and unique. Knowing that my work can empower someone and become part of their personal story is incredibly fulfilling. It reminds me why I started this journey in the first place.

You’re currently working on opening a physical salon that will combine beauty services and your creative offerings. What inspired this concept of a one-stop beauty and artistry space?

I wanted to create a space where people could experience beauty, self-expression, and creativity all in one place. It’s about more than just services—it’s an environment that celebrates individuality and artistry. By combining crochet pieces with beauty services, clients can see, feel, and interact with my work in a more immersive way.

Many aspiring entrepreneurs in the Caribbean struggle to turn their creative passions into sustainable businesses. What advice would you give to someone trying to do exactly that?

Start small, but start. Be consistent, invest in learning the business side of your craft, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or collaborate. Your passion is your power, but sustainability comes from planning, patience, and persistence. Also, trust your unique vision—it’s what will set you apart.

Social media has become a powerful tool for entrepreneurs. How has Instagram helped grow your brand and connect with your audience?

Instagram has been essential in growing Meembroid. It allows me to showcase the personality behind my brand, engage directly with customers, and share the story of each piece. Through consistent posting and authentic interaction, I’ve built a community of people who believe in my vision and support handmade creativity.

Community empowerment is clearly part of your mission. How do you hope your work inspires other Caribbean women and creatives?

I want my journey to show that it’s possible to turn your passion into a business while staying true to yourself. I hope Caribbean women see Meembroid and feel inspired to pursue their own creative ideas, embrace their heritage, and understand the value of their unique talents. Empowerment starts with representation and possibility.

Looking ahead, what’s next for Genelle Marshall and the Meembroid brand? Are there any exciting projects or expansions on the horizon?

The next step is launching the physical salon and expanding our product lines to include seasonal collections that reflect cultural themes and sustainable practices. I’m also exploring collaborations with other Caribbean creatives to broaden the reach of handmade fashion. My goal is to continue growing Meembroid as a brand that celebrates creativity, beauty, and community.
