During Caribbean American Heritage Month, we celebrate the vibrant contributions of Caribbean-Americans across the arts, sciences, and cuisine. Among these luminaries stands Chef Nina Compton, a proud daughter of St. Lucia, whose culinary artistry has earned her a rightful place on the global gastronomic stage.
Born and raised on the lush island of St. Lucia, Chef Compton’s passion for food was ignited in her grandmother’s kitchen, where the aromas of island spices and traditional dishes nurtured her early curiosity. This rich Caribbean heritage laid the foundation for a culinary journey that would take her from St. Lucia to the world’s most prestigious kitchens.
Compton sharpened her skills in renowned restaurants in New York City and Miami, but it was in New Orleans—a city known for its own deep culinary traditions—that she found her true home. There, she launched her signature restaurants: Compère Lapin, BABs, and the upcoming Nina’s Creole Cottage. Each is a love letter to both her Caribbean roots and the complex flavors of New Orleans’ Creole cuisine. With a deft hand, she fuses island ingredients like scotch bonnet peppers, plantains, and callaloo with classic French techniques and soulful Southern elements.
Her innovative cuisine first caught national attention on Bravo’s Top Chef: New Orleans (Season 11), where she was a fan favorite and runner-up. The exposure cemented her status as a rising star in the culinary world, but it was her relentless dedication to craft and culture that earned her critical acclaim.
In 2018, she received the James Beard Award for Best Chef: South, and was named one of Food & Wine's Best New Chefs, honors that recognized not just her talent but her unique voice in American cooking.
Beyond the kitchen, Compton is a proud culinary ambassador for St. Lucia, carrying her homeland’s flavors, stories, and traditions to a global audience. Through her dishes, she continues to educate, inspire, and elevate Caribbean cuisine, proving it belongs at the center of the world’s most esteemed dining experiences.
This Caribbean American Heritage Month, we honor Chef Nina Compton for her innovative spirit, cultural pride, and role in transforming the American culinary landscape. She reminds us that food is more than sustenance—it’s storytelling, legacy, and an enduring bridge between past and present.
Follow her journey and celebrate the flavors of the Caribbean, one inspired dish at a time.
