There’s something magical about a bowl of Rasta Pasta — creamy, colorful, and full of that unmistakable Caribbean flavor. Inspired by Jamaica’s Ital roots and the bold spices of the islands, this dish combines tender pasta, vibrant bell peppers, jerk seasoning, and a velvety coconut cream sauce that dances on your tongue.

How to Make the Best Rasta Pasta

Whether you’re vegan, pescatarian, or a full-blown meat lover, Rasta Pasta is a crowd-pleaser that never fails to impress.

Ingredients

For the Pasta

  • 1 lb penne pasta (or your favorite shape)

  • 1 tbsp salt

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

For the Sauce

  • 2 tbsp butter (or coconut oil for a dairy-free version)

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 3 bell peppers (red, green, and yellow), thinly sliced

  • 2 sprigs fresh thyme

  • 2 tsp jerk seasoning (adjust to taste)

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 1 cup coconut milk (or heavy cream for extra richness)

  • ½ cup grated Parmesan or vegan cheese (optional)

  • Salt & black pepper to taste

Optional Add-Ins

  • Grilled jerk shrimp, chicken, or tofu for extra protein

  • Scotch bonnet pepper for a fiery kick (use cautiously!)

  • Scallions and parsley for garnish

Directions

Step 1: Cook the Pasta

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook until al dente according to package instructions. Drain and set aside with a drizzle of olive oil to prevent sticking.

Step 2: Sauté the Veggies

In a large skillet, heat butter or coconut oil over medium heat. Add onion, garlic, and thyme. Sauté until fragrant, then toss in the sliced bell peppers. Cook until tender-crisp — you want them to keep their color and crunch.

Step 3: Spice It Up

Sprinkle in jerk seasoning and paprika. Stir well to coat the veggies — your kitchen should already smell like the islands at this point!

Step 4: Make It Creamy

Pour in coconut milk and let it simmer until slightly thickened. Taste and season with salt and black pepper.

Step 5: Combine Everything

Add the cooked pasta and toss to coat evenly in the sauce. Stir in Parmesan (if using) and allow the flavors to come together for 2–3 minutes on low heat.

Step 6: Serve Island-Style

Plate your Rasta Pasta and top with grilled jerk shrimp, chicken, or tofu. Garnish with fresh parsley and sliced scallions for that perfect finish.

Chef’s Tips

  • Balance the spice: Jerk seasoning varies by brand — taste as you go.

  • Go Ital: Use coconut oil and skip cheese for a vegan-friendly version.

  • Make it colorful: The more vibrant your peppers, the better your dish looks on the plate!

The Story Behind the Dish

Rasta Pasta was born from Jamaica’s Ital cooking traditions, emphasizing natural, plant-based ingredients. The name pays tribute to Rastafarian culture, where food is seen as nourishment for both body and soul. The addition of creamy sauce and jerk spice brings together the best of two worlds — wholesome Ital roots with modern Caribbean comfort.

Overall

Rasta Pasta isn’t just a meal — it’s a vibe. It’s a celebration of Caribbean color, culture, and creativity all in one bowl. Whether you’re cooking for friends, family, or just yourself, this dish brings the warmth of the islands right to your table.
