  • The Mystery of Chia: Creamy Fruit Smoothie with Chia Seed Pudding

Chia is becoming a very popular superfood in Trinidad and Tobago, but many people don’t know about all of its benefits or how to use it. Chia seeds are an ancient grain used by the Aztec and Mayans. In fact, “chia” is a Mayan word meaning strength. Chia seeds provide some of the best sources of fiber and are high in natural antioxidant compounds such as beta carotene. They are high in calcium, proteins and fatty acids. The addition of chia seeds helps control hunger and leave you feeling full, faster, which makes them the perfect addition to someone’s diet who is looking to lose weight. But where, and how, can you use chia? Nutritionist and KitchenAid consultant, Maria Calle, shares one of the most delicious ways to enjoy this trendy superfood. Chia seeds are the perfect companion to a smoothie, according to Maria Calle. With its minimal flavor, chia seeds will boost nutritional content and create a creamy gel giving your smoothie a unique consistency. The gel is what leaves the body feeling fuller longer because the fiber converts the starches to sugars slower. Chia seeds are also perfect for smoothies since they have no flavor. The only thing that will change is the texture of the ingredients. Now, Maria Calle shares her secret recipe for feeling great, with a delicious smoothie. Creamy Fruit Smoothie with Chia Seed Pudding Recipe Instructions: For the Chia Pudding: 6 tablespoons of Chia Seeds (dry) 1 cup of Almond Milk 2 teaspoons of Vanilla Extract ½ teaspoon of Cinnamon Powder (or 2 sticks) Stevia to taste Steps: In a bowl, mix all of the ingredients together until all of the chia seeds are completely soaked. Leave the bowl with all of the ingredients in the refrigerator overnight (minimum 3 hours). For the Creamy Fruit Smoothie: 3 Frozen Bananas 1 Cup of Frozen Red Fruits (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries to taste) 1/8 cup of Water Steps: Peel and Cut the frozen bananas in 3 large pieces Put the banana pieces, frozen fruits and water in the KitchenAid® Magnetic Blender jar Lock the Jar into the base and place the dial on the Smoothie function. • Young actress following in her mom footsteps

When Aaliyah Cinello was three months old, her mother had an inkling she was going to be special. “She had that spark in her,” said Raven Cinello. “I just knew it. You could say it was a mother’s intuition.” Starting as a fashion model for Joe Fresh, Walmart, Pizza Hut, Hudson’s Bay, Toys ‘R’ Us and Carter’s, Cinello quickly graduated to films and television shows. Making her movie debut at age four in the Canadian drama series, “The L.A. Complex”, she has appeared in “The Adventures of Napkin Man”, “Warehouse 13”, “Robocop”, “The Christmas Switch” and “Wayne”. Cinello was also cast in episode one of “Heroes Reborn”, a TV mini-series featuring American actor/screenwriter, Jack Coleman, who is best known for playing the role of Steven Carrington in “Dynasty”, a 1980 prime time soap opera. “That was a huge moment for Aaliyah as she got the opportunity to interact with Jack,” said her mother. “She has a good memory for lines, she’s on the rise and I am very happy for her.” The Grade Three student, who is excelling in the classroom, relishes math and the arts. “I love singing, acting and going on camera,” said Aaliyah. “I also get to meet interesting people and make new friends when I am on set which I like very much.” For the young actress, who performed at the 2013 Planet Africa Awards and this year’s Federation of Adventist Youth annual celebration to mark the birthday of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Born in Cuba and raised in Jamaica, Raven Cinello made her modelling debut at age 16 after being discovered in a mall a year earlier. She has earned roles in numerous film and TV shows, including “Detroit Rock City”, “Lovers & Strangers”, “Degrassi”, “The Eleventh Hour” and “Motives & Murders”. She has also appeared in commercials for Cadbury, Volkswagen, Fisher Price, Toyota and McDonald’s. Raven Cinello said her father’s death in 2004 in Canada provided her with a new focus. “My dad was old school and believed you should go to school, do well and find a ‘real’ job,” she said. “He didn’t look at acting and modelling as ‘real’ work. Also, when you marry and have a family, you tend to forget about the career you want for yourself. After he died, I looked at myself and realized I could be a mom and an actor. I know he would be proud of me and my daughter and would be cheering for us.” Cinello was married in 2002. “I am proud of my wife and daughter,” said her husband, Lui. ................................................................................................................................ • A Trinbago Christmas

Christmas celebrations are in the air and nobody can escape the frenzy of cleaning the house, painting, sewing new curtains, purchasing new furniture and appliances (as it is out with the old and in with the new for it is customary for the new year that the new year meets a house with a new furniture or appliance whichever one it is); plus buying up of all the pricy gifts for loved ones, attending various pre-Christmas parties and even going all out with the stocking up of all varieties of local food items, fruits and vegetables, which is my favorite because I love food and there are also lots of snacks for the kids, chocolates included – that I never ever weigh myself, because I know that I will be putting on a lot of pounds over the Christmas season. The Caribbean, well Trinidad and Tobago is known for its pre-Christmas parties, with countless food and drinks in galore, that everywhere you look or turn at whatever time, day or night, there will be a number of restaurants and eatery open. We in sweet trinbago love our bellies, for we all have a sweet tooth and even when it comes to the holiday, even the greatest fitness gurus work are much harder, as they have to work effortlessly to persuade the general public to curb their cravings and try to exercise regularly, which is great, since almost everyone turn their homes upside down and move around furniture and do some minor repairs to their houses during the holiday, but eating healthier diets will only work for the few who really want to stick to a strict diet and exercise plan; but for others, christmas only comes around once a year, so we going to go all out.
