Dancehall icon Vybz Kartel is expanding his influence beyond his own recording career, officially signing rising Jamaican singer and songwriter Shenequa as the first female artist on his GreedyLion/Vybz Kartel Muzik label.

The signing marks a significant milestone for both Shenequa and the label as Kartel continues to develop the business and mentorship side of his career while supporting a new generation of Jamaican talent.

Shenequa joins the label at a time when she is building momentum around her latest single, “My Show,” accompanied by a music video designed to showcase her sound, confidence and personality.

Vybz Kartel Backs Shenequa’s Next Chapter

Kartel has made it clear that the signing is intended to be more than simply adding another name to the GreedyLion roster.

“Shenequa is entering a new chapter. With the backing, visibility and creative energy, the team and I will be taking her career to another level, so stay tuned,” Kartel said following the announcement.

He has also indicated that collaborations between himself and his newest signee are already being considered, potentially giving Shenequa an important platform as she works to introduce her music to a wider Dancehall and Reggae audience.

For Shenequa, being selected by one of Dancehall's most influential figures represents a major career opportunity.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be signed by one of the world’s greats. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity, and it’s only up from here,” she said.

Who Is Shenequa?

Shenequa is an emerging Jamaican singer and songwriter currently positioning herself as a fresh female voice within the Dancehall space.

In addition to “My Show,” her growing catalogue includes the single “Emotionally Scarred.” Her music and approach to songwriting are rooted in self-expression, with the singer describing music as an art form without a strict definition of what is right or wrong.

But her ambitions extend beyond releasing successful songs.

Shenequa has openly expressed a desire to challenge perceptions surrounding how far female Reggae and Dancehall artists can go within the international music industry.

“I aim to change the perception that female Reggae/Dancehall artistes are limited to a certain level of success in the music industry,” she said.

It is an ambitious goal in a genre where women have historically had to fight harder for equal visibility, opportunities and longevity. Yet Jamaican women have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to command international audiences, and Shenequa now has the backing of one of Dancehall's most recognizable names as she attempts to establish her own place in that lineage.

Kartel Moves Further Into Artist Development

The signing is also notable for what it could signal about Vybz Kartel's evolving role in Dancehall.

Kartel has spent decades influencing the sound, language and direction of Jamaican popular music. His impact has also extended to artist development, most famously through the Gaza Empire era, which helped bring increased attention to several emerging performers.

Now, GreedyLion/Vybz Kartel Muzik provides another avenue for him to use his influence, industry knowledge and enormous international audience to develop talent.

Making a rising female singer the label's first female signing could be an indication that GreedyLion is looking beyond Kartel's own releases and toward building a broader roster.

The real test, however, will be what comes next.

A high-profile signing can generate immediate attention, but developing a sustainable career requires strong music, consistent releases, marketing, live performances and an identifiable artistic brand. Shenequa will ultimately have to turn the visibility surrounding the announcement into listeners and long-term supporters.

“My Show” Offers the First Look at What Comes Next

For now, “My Show” serves as an introduction to this new phase of Shenequa's career.

With Kartel already teasing collaborations, listeners may not have to wait long to hear what the two artists can create together.

The partnership also arrives during an increasingly active chapter in Kartel's career, one that has seen him balance recording and international performances with broader conversations about longevity, legacy and the future of his place in Jamaican music.

For Shenequa, the opportunity could prove transformative.

Being the first female artist signed to GreedyLion/Vybz Kartel Muzik guarantees attention, but what she does with that spotlight will ultimately determine the significance of the signing.

One thing is certain: with Vybz Kartel publicly putting his support behind her and new music already in circulation, Shenequa is a name Dancehall fans will be hearing much more about.
